The COVID-19 pandemic will most likely also have an impact on this year’s High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. In view of the expected limitations on in-person meetings and international travel, the ECOSOC Bureau is planning to make adjustments to the format and programme of HLPF 2020. While we wait for more news on the final format, it remains crucial to share local experiences with the Sustainable Development Goals.
Accelerated action and transformative pathways
This years’ HLPF will focus on accelerated action and transformative pathways: realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development. The year 2020 marks a transition to the second quadrennial cycle of the HLPF. In this year, as Member States deliberate options for the structure of the HLPF moving forward, there are no specific focus goals under review.
Virtual consultations on various topics
Rather than the SDG focus, the six ‘entry points’ identified in the Global Sustainable Development Report, as well as the prioritized areas of action identified in the Political Declaration of the SDG Summit have helped to shape the HLPF program in efforts to emphasize the interlinkages across the SDGs and identify where strategic interventions can harness synergies across goals and targets; help mitigate the trade-offs between them and; accelerate progress towards achieving the overarching objective of ‘leaving no one behind’. Different virtual preparatory consultations on these topics will take place in the next months, in which representatives of UCLG will actively participate.
Preparations for a Third Forum of Local and Regional Governments
As it is the case every year, UCLG, as facilitator of the Global Taskforce and on behalf of the constituency, is following closely the developments of the preparations, and advocating for the inclusion of local and regional governments, also in view of the Third Forum of Local and Regional Governments.
