The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR) is implementing a Sida-funded project – Resilience in Local Governance: Reslog - in Turkey and Lebanon aiming at resilient and sustainable local governance systems in light of the Syria refugee crisis.
Cities and regions throughout the world are raising their stakes in humanitarian support, realising that foreign action is a responsibility of all levels of government. The City of Barcelona’s activities in Lebanon and Jordan are a good example of the power that resides in cities to reach out and support foreign cities and regions by sharing both resources and local expertise.
Several CIB members are currently active in the Middle East, supporting local governments which are dealing with the Syrian refugee crisis. The region has been heavily impacted by the crisis which creates considerable challenges for local governments. Both the Province of Barcelona and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), as well as VNG International, have launched projects in the region, of which you will find short descriptions below.
