On 22 January 2026, the Swedish Government decided that the Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD) will no longer receive funding through Sida after 31 December 2026. As a result, ICLD will be phased out. The decision means that a well-established model for local democracy cooperation will come to an end.
ICLD was established to enable Swedish municipalities and regions to engage directly in international development cooperation. Through partnerships between local governments, the organisation has supported long-term capacity building, democratic governance, and the promotion of human rights at the local level.
ICLD expresses deep appreciation for all partners and colleagues worldwide. The work carried out over the years has made a tangible and lasting impact on local communities and democratic development.
The CIB Secretariat expresses its regret at this development and extends its deep appreciation to ICLD for its valuable work and longstanding commitment to local democracy and international cooperation.
