Following the adoption of the 2030 Agenda by the United Nations (UN) on the 27th of September, the Deutscher Staedtetag (the German Cities Association) published a declaration, to be signed by German municipalities. The declaration is aimed at achieving political backing of city councils for implementing the agenda at the local level.

The declaration calls for the national government to include local authorities as equals in the creation of strategies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); and to recognise the importance of municipal effort in achieving the SDGs. It also calls on municipalities to create concrete methods and tools towards implementing the SDGs; and to raise awareness of the activities undertaken to create support among the citizens.

The document furthermore lists other possible contributions along the lines of information and awareness raising, networking and advocacy and implementation. The document is available in both German and English to ensure that more municipalities can declare their intentions.
