
On February 28th, FCM and the Government of Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development signed a memorandum of understanding to ensure greater collaboration between the Government of Canada and the Canadian municipalities on questions related to international development. FCM’s Sustainable and Inclusive Communities in Latin America (CISAL) program is the first to be implemented as part of this strategic partnership. Through this five-year $20 million program, FCM's municipal experts will work with local governments in Colombia and Peru to help them manage both the impacts and benefits of working with the mining sector, while creating lasting economic development opportunities. Through its second phase of programming in Haiti, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), in partnership with the City of Montreal and the des municipalités du Québec, is working with selected local governments to establish more transparent, efficient and sustainable models of local administration that can deliver services and support community development. This experience expands the work initiated during the initial post-disaster recovery program, during which a formal structure of inter-municipal cooperation was piloted with encouraging results in the region of Les Palmes.
