CIB looks back on a very successful UCLG World Congress in Durban. The matrix of CIB members’ activities already showcased that various CIB members would be very active in Durban and this was indeed the case.

Local democracy and international solidarity are under stress. Local governments play a crucial role in international relations and programmes – how can we, as CIB Working Group, continue to raise awareness for the role and responsibilities of local governments in development cooperation, aid effectiveness and democracy? And how can we assure sufficient means for local governments, both for domestic challenges, as for international work?

In december the CIB Working Group and UCLG Learning organized webinars about best practices from Local Government Associations on SDG implementation and reporting in three different languages (ES, ENG, FR). 

Since the 7th of November it is possible to apply for the second edition of the UCLG Peace Prize, to be handed out in 2019. The Peace Prize aims at creating momentum for local governments worldwide that implement strategies for conflict prevention, peace-building and post-conflict reconstruction. The Prize celebrates successful initiatives undertaken by local governments and stimulates others to follow suit.

We are excited to update you on the upcoming CIB webinar.  

Last July, 400 peoplegathered in Paris, to discuss various challenges that towns and regions are facing. The occassion was a conference organized by Cités Unies France (CUF), on the internationalization of towns and regions. While a large part of the representatives were French local government representatives, different delegations from partner countries, as well as embassy officials attended as well..

During the 2019 High Level Political Forum as well as the UCLG World Congres in Autumn 2019, UCLG will present the 5th report of the Global Observatory on Decentralisation and Local Democracy, also named GOLD V. This report will showcase the current situation of local and regional governments worldwide and their involvement in the localization of the global agendas. To do so, your help and support is highly needed!

The first UCLG World Forum on Intermediary Cities led to the adoption of the ‘Declaration-Charter of the Intermediary Cities of the World'.

In a couple of weeks only, the next CIB annual meeting will take place in Stockholm. We have already received 40 registrations from all around the world for this event, taking place on 19-20 June 2018. If you have not yet registered but plan to come, please notify the CIB secretariat by filling this form.

UCLG is continuously working to amplify the voice of and secure a seat at the global tables for local and regional governments. Below, you will find an overview of the recent work implemented by UCLG on the various international agendas. The news item is not exhaustive, but focuses on some of the more relevant issues for the CIB network. This overview was presented at the UCLG Executive Bureau, which took place last week in Strasbourg.
